9 Common Types Of Attic Mold Found In Florida
Mold can be various colors, textures, and shapes. Each type of mold needs moisture and a food source to thrive. Most of the time, this food source is your home’s structural elements and things sitting around in your attic.
After mold takes root, it’s essential to have a professional mold remediation and sanitizing service to rid your home of microscopic mold spores.
But keep in mind, we also must address the cause of your attic mold to ensure future infestations never happen. Here’s a list of some of the most common molds we find in St. Lucie County attics and crawl spaces.
Alterneria
Within dozens of Alterneria species, just a few are able to survive indoors. These mold spores tend to spread in the air using the wind to travel, so if Alterneria blooms in your home, the spore will circulate throughout the home through your HVAC system.
After eliminating mold and mildew and addressing the source, it’s always a good idea to have your HVAC contractor come out for a duct cleaning.
Acremonium
If your home has an acrimonium infestation, there’s likely a leak issue. You’ll likely notice the wet and slimy spores; these spread through water droplets. However, with enough airflow, it’s possible for dried spores to circulate throughout a home, too.
Aspergillus/Penicillium
These are two different molds that are usually confused with each other because they’re so alike. The spores travel through the wind or airflow. But keep in mind, many mites prefer these molds as a food source. So if you have these types of mold in your home, you may also have a mite or insect issue, as well.
Chaetomium
Chaetomium is a mold that’s found on lots of different surfaces. Its preferred food source is wet wood, moist sheetrock paper, and other cellulose products. If you have Chaetomium, you’re likely having a moisture control issue. We’ll look for leaks, poor ventilation, and inadequate insulation issues throughout your home.
Cladosportium
Cladosportium is commonly found in homes and businesses because this mold likes a moist environment. This is one of the most resilient molds around as it’s capable of tolerating colder temperatures. So, if the weather gets cold in Florida, just know that this isn’t enough to get rid of Cladosportium!
Epicoccum
This mold is spreading through airflow. You’ll find Epicoccum on lots of different substrates commonly found in homes, such as paper and textiles.
Stachybotrys
If you have shower or bathroom mold, you probably have Stachybotrys. This mold. Is typically found in moist places as the spores travel via water droplets or flowing water. These spores thrive in leaky attics with lots of condensation.
Torula
If you have a leak issue, you might have Torula mold. This mold’s spores spread via wind or airflow and target cellulose materials. You may notice this on cellulose insulation, wood, and paper in your home or business.
Ulocladium
Ulocladium infestations typically come from significant water issues. This mold species prefers extreme dampness, like damp wallboards, to thrive. After spores are released, they move via the air and can travel throughout your home through your air system.
Signs You Have An Attic Mold Problem
Scheduling a mold inspection with a licensed mold professional is essential for figuring out if you have a mold issue in the attic. Even though some molds may be visible, there’s only so much that can be seen through a visual inspection using a stairway or attic access panel.
You might have mold or mildew in the attic if your attic smells musty, feels humid during the warmer months, has visible stains on attic plywood, or has condensation on uninsulated ducts, windows, or other hard surfaces.
Keep in mind, mold will deteriorate surfaces in your attic, meaning attic mold control is essential to maintain your home’s structural integrity. Your roof, walls, and joists will thank you!
The Dangers Of Allowing Attic Mold To Flourish
Ignoring mold problems can have serious long-term repercussions. For instance, a moldy attic can lead to:
- Unhealthy Indoor Air Quality: Poor air quality indoors can harm your health. Living in mold-infested spaces significantly increases the risk of asthma attacks, allergies, and other respiratory conditions. After removing mold, it’s wise to schedule an HVAC checkup to discuss options like duct cleaning, air filtration, and humidity control.
- Reduced Energy Efficiency: Mold can damage your home’s structure, compromising its energy efficiency. This often results in higher than necessary air conditioning costs.
- Decreased Comfort: Mold is a sign of moisture problems, including humidity issues, making it difficult to maintain comfortable temperatures throughout your home.
- Structural Damage and Costly Repairs: Mold can eventually lead to extensive repairs of walls, roofs, and other parts of your home, resulting in expensive repair and replacement bills.
Regular home maintenance is crucial to preventing mold from taking over attics and crawl spaces. Schedule annual inspections of your roof, attic, and HVAC systems to protect your finances and address mold issues before they become severe.
