Mold Cleanup Tips & Techniques
At MR PSL, we understand that the decision on who should handle mold cleanup depends largely on the extent of the mold problem. For areas less than 10 square feet (roughly a 3 ft. by 3 ft. patch), most homeowners can manage the cleanup themselves by following our Mold Cleanup Tips & Techniques. However, for larger areas or significant water damage:
- Consult Professionals: For mold growth covering more than 10 square feet or extensive water damage, refer to the EPA’s Mold Remediation in Schools and Commercial Buildings guide. Although aimed at schools and commercial buildings, its principles are applicable to other structures as well.
- Hiring MR PSL: If you decide to hire us as your mold mitigation company in Indian River County, rest assured you’re choosing experts in mold cleanup. All our contractors have verified experience in mold mitigation. If hiring another contractor, ensure they have verifiable experience in mold remediation, check references, and confirm they follow guidelines from reputable sources like the EPA, the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH), and the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning, and Restoration Certification (IICRC).
- HVAC Systems: If mold contamination is suspected in your HVAC system (e.g., mold near the intake or moisture issues), consult the EPA guide on Air Duct Cleaning. Avoid using the HVAC system if mold contamination is confirmed, as it can spread mold throughout your building.
- Contaminated Water: For mold or water damage resulting from sewage or other contaminated water, hire professionals with experience in handling such situations.
- Health Concerns: Consult a health professional if you have any health concerns before starting the cleanup process.
Tips & Techniques
These tips and techniques will help you effectively address mold problems. While professional cleaners or remediators might use different methods, these guidelines will assist you in managing mold cleanup:
- Address Water Issues: Promptly fix plumbing leaks and other water problems. Ensure all items are thoroughly dried.
- Cleaning Hard Surfaces: Scrub mold off hard surfaces using detergent and water, then dry the surfaces completely.
- Porous Materials: Absorbent or porous materials, such as ceiling tiles and carpets, may need to be discarded if moldy. Mold can infiltrate the empty spaces and crevices of these materials, making it difficult or impossible to remove completely.
- Safety Measures: Avoid exposing yourself or others to mold.
- Painting and Caulking: Do not paint or caulk over moldy surfaces. Clean the mold and dry the surfaces thoroughly before applying paint. Paint applied over moldy surfaces is likely to peel.
- Consult a Specialist: If unsure how to clean an item or if it’s valuable or sentimental, consider consulting a specialist. Experts in furniture repair, restoration, painting, art restoration, carpet and rug cleaning, water damage, and fire or water restoration can often be found in local directories. Always check references and look for specialists affiliated with professional organizations like MR PSL.
Bathroom Tips
Maintaining a mold-free bathroom can be challenging, especially in areas that are frequently or constantly damp.
Here are some strategies to manage mold in the bathroom:
- Ventilation: Increase ventilation by running a fan or opening a window. This helps reduce moisture levels and prevent mold growth.
- Regular Cleaning: Clean the bathroom more frequently. This can help keep mold at bay or reduce its recurrence in areas like the shower.
If mold reappears despite these efforts, it’s essential to address the underlying moisture problem for long-term mold control.
Floods and Flooding
During flood cleanup, indoor air quality might seem like a minor concern compared to other immediate issues.
However, neglecting to remove contaminated materials and reduce moisture and humidity can lead to serious long-term health risks. Here’s what you need to know:
- Health Risks: Standing water and wet materials can become breeding grounds for microorganisms such as viruses, bacteria, and mold. These can cause diseases, trigger allergic reactions, and continue to damage materials long after the flood.
- Immediate Action: Remove standing water and thoroughly dry all affected areas and materials as quickly as possible. Use dehumidifiers and ventilation to help reduce moisture levels.
- Contaminated Materials: Materials contaminated by floodwaters, especially porous ones, may need to be discarded. This includes items like ceiling tiles, insulation, and carpet.
- Professional Help: Consider hiring MR PSL professionals experienced in flood cleanup and mold remediation to ensure all contaminated materials are properly handled and the area is thoroughly dried and sanitized.
Taking these steps can help prevent mold growth and protect your health and the structural integrity of your home or office.

Mold Mitigation Martin County, Florida
Martin County, situated in southeastern Florida, is a vibrant region with a rich history. According to the 2020 census, the population of Martin County was 158,431, with Stuart serving as the county seat. The county is part of the Port St. Lucie, FL Metropolitan Statistical Area.
Martin County was established in 1925, formed from parts of St. Lucie County to the north and Palm Beach County to the south. It was named in honor of John W. Martin, who served as Governor of Florida from 1925 to 1929.
Initially, the western boundary of Martin County followed the shore of Lake Okeechobee, similar to the borders of Glades, Okeechobee, and Hendry counties. Historically, Palm Beach County had claimed the entire surface of Lake Okeechobee within its area, benefiting from state and federal highway funds allocated based on this larger area.
In response to this imbalance, William Ralph Scott, the state representative from Stuart in Martin County, proposed a bill to divide the lake’s surface among the adjacent counties. This redistribution aimed to create a fairer allocation of state funds for road construction and maintenance.
All bordering counties agreed to the change, except for Palm Beach County. In a symbolic gesture, Palm Beach County representatives later presented Representative Scott with a jug of water, signifying “all the water Bill Scott left Palm Beach County.” This jug is now preserved by Stuart Heritage.
